A SHOP OF WONDROUS THINGS

Our Story

Waters Edge is run by Scottish illustrator, Catherine Redgate, and her partner Kris.

“Opening our first shop premises in Spring 2026 is such an exciting next step after growing my own illustration business for the last 7 years. Our new space stocks not only my own wide range of functional products but an exciting collection of lovely goodies that have caught our eye too!

Well-recognised by locals and visitors alike, Kris and I were delighted to have the opportunity to take on Starfish Studio in Johnshaven, especially having stocked the shop with my own wares since 2009, and our game, Waters Edge.

Our goal is to continue to bring a curated collection of intriguing and interesting wares to compliment my own illustration work whilst showcasing a range of artists and makers from across the country, creating an exciting shopping experience for our customers.”
— Catherine Redgate

History of 3 Anchor Lane

Did you know? Catherine first stocked the shop when it originally opened!

2009

Set up in 2009 by Kate MacKenzie as Starfish Studio, the space – originally thought to be used to dry fishing nets – was converted into a welcoming shop showcasing local maker’s products as well as a space to hold creative workshops. The floor was partly brick with an enormous stone lintel over what is now the shop window. The project won a prestigious Aberdeenshire design award for the conversion into a shop space.

Catherine’s hand-sewn items under her then-business name of g00glie-eye Designs also featured in the shop – little did she know she would be taking on the shop 17 years down the line!

2019

Kay & Wendy took on Starfish Studio in 2019 and continued to add to the exciting collection of makers, artists and designers including local Johnshaven creatives – the village potter, Hilary, painter Morag Smith and David’s popular handcrafted wooden boats.

They also stocked Catherine’s illustrated products including the popular Waters Edge card game.

2026

Catherine & Kris took on the shop premises in May and rebranded to Waters Edge – a name close to heart having created a world-renown card game of the same name whilst capturing the shop’s wonderful coastal location of Johnshaven! Can you spot the nod to Starfish Studio’s history in the logo?

The shop will feature Catherine’s illustration work as well as a curated collection of wonderful makers and artists from across the country whose work has caught their eyes.
